Skin sensitive products drive body colour cosmetics market

Skin sensitive products are set to become market drivers in the
body colour cosmetics category, according to a new forecast report.

Market researchers at Mintel say the growth will be driven by the increasing number of consumers who demand products with gentler formulations, decreasing the risk of skin allergies. Body colour cosmetics are defined as any product that can be used to give colour and shine to the body, including body glitter and non-permanent bronzer products. However, sunless tanners that leave a more permanent effect are classed under sun care. While Mintel's review of the body colour cosmetics market during the first quarter of 2007 found an overall decrease of sales in the wake of the lucrative festive period, the market traditionally picks up in the summer. More consumers desire body colour cosmetics during the period, when more skin is normally exposed. Mintel expect companies to issue many skin sensitive lines incorporating natural ingredients in a bid to meet the demand from health conscious consumers. "In this quarter, we reported on several products that offered formulations adapted to the needs of sensitive skin,"​ the report stated. "These products are generally aimed at consumers concerned about using products that could be too harsh on their skin; or who simply want to avoid the risk of getting an allergic reaction."​ To this end many body colour cosmetic manufacturers have launched products that incorporate vitamins and anti-oxidants as the key ingredients. Such products from the US and the UK incorporated vitamins and minerals in a bid to 'combat free radicals' and promote healthier skin. The two countries are responsible for the largest number of product releases in the market, though they had fewer product launches in the first quarter 2007 compared to last year. Consumers increasingly have a higher disposable income, and are ready to pay upwards for brands that give a perception of quality, therefore premium products are another key driver in the body colour cosmetics segment. Guerlain, Estee Lauder, and Albion were among the companies launching premium products in the past quarter. Mintel predicts that this trend will continue, with designer brands leading both the fashion and beauty market. Likewise, more ethical formulations are expected to drive the segment across the broad spectrum of the cosmetics industry. Biodegradable packaging is just one area consumers are pushing for, with concern mounting over the impact of waste on the environment.
