Lyofal has capitialised on years of experience of freeze drying
food products by creating an innovative brand of cosmetics set to
challenge competitors with its efficacy and less need for
preservatives – targeting the lucrative naturals segment.

The company developed the range at its factory in Marsailles, using 25 freeze dryers to create a cosmetic range using the 'soft technique' that enables the product to preserve its form longer than standard manufacturing techniques. A freeze-dried cosmetic product is created by initially freezing the product at a very low temperature before strongly lowering the pressure, which then subliminates the ice, leaving the product in the form of steam. When the product returns to normal temperature it is dry and cold, and will not regain moisture. Due to the lack of preservatives the freeze-dried cosmetic product carries, it is hypoallergenic – making it appropriate for consumers seeking products that are suitable for sensitive skin complexions whilst also tapping into the booming natural and organics segment that is currently presiding in the cosmetics industry. The company has stated that its freeze-dried products have numerous innovative benefits that highlight the significance they could hold in the market. "The freeze dried product preserves its form, is chemically stable both thermodynamically and at a microbiological level. Therefore freeze drying makes it possible to preserve fragile substances - sensitive to water or heat - to extract solvents and to improve the solubility of the product" a spokesperson said. Lyofal also highlights the manufacturing benefits stating that with the active ingredients contained in the emulsion not being constrained at strong temperatures, they cannot be damaged during production. Likewise, as the product is dry, the active ingredients are protected throughout the lifespan of the product In order to release the actives the dry product must be rehydrated at the time of use – done by applying them with a circular massage on wet skin or using a wet brush or vaporisation of active water. In a bid to expand its product portfolio the company has proposed the development of future products such as dry patches (occlusive contacts) for the lips and eyes contours, freeze dried actives in airless bottles and powder emulsions.
