Sustainability Corner at in-cosmetics: a closer look
The new feature comes as a response to mounting industry focus on the practice of sustainable production - development and manufacture that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own.
It has become a hot topic in the beauty and personal care industry as consumers, particularly those of younger generations, have begun to demand environmental and ethical responsibility as a key consumer concern.
The in-cosmetics Sustainability Corner is set to showcase a selection of environmental and social initiatives, according to organisers, and will be on display in the Sustainability Corner at in-cosmetics Global 2017.
Key concerns?
Various key concerns within sustainability have emerged over the past year.
As the show’s organisers note, these centre on the areas of water, waste and emissions management, environmental responsibility and sustainable forest management.
These “have dominated the headlines in recent times, generating concern for consumers and governments across the globe,” the in-cosmetics team explains.
“As part of an industry-wide effort, beauty brands and their suppliers are now investing heavily to develop more sustainable formulations and manufacturing processes.”
It’s an area that our recent interview with industry expert Chris Sayner explored, in which the Croda VP explained the reality of what companies within the beauty and personal care supply chain need to be doing.
He notes that we are now past the point where companies can present surface-level green credentials: “There’s no room for green-washing any more.”
Sustainability Corner
The new feature of the in-cosmetics show aims to highlight how the beauty industry is moving beyond compliance and paving the way towards a fundamentally more sustainable business model, its organisers assert.
Located on the show floor, the interactive space – made from renewable materials – will educate and inform visitors while providing a forum to debate key aspects of sustainability. It will also illustrate what the cosmetics sector is doing to support the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In-cosmetics Global takes place 4 - 6 April this year, and is sponsored by Solvay. The international chemical group commented: "Lamia Narcisse, Sustainability Director, Solvay, commented: "At Solvay we are driven by trust in progress and the concern for responsibility. The challenge of more eco-conscious development is an opportunity for us to invent tomorrow's world."
