At the in-cosmetics event in Hamburg Cosmetics Design met with Mibelle Biochemistry’s Dr Fred Zuelli, who explained the company’s new snow algae extract launched at the show, and explains how it works.

“It is not a new concept but the biochemistry is,” says Zuelli. “The biochemistry is based on major genes and proteins involved in the caloric restriction concept.”

Studies has shown that these genes do exhibit activity which delays ageing. Instead of doing caloric restriction, Mibelle Biochemistry is able to produce a caloric restriction mimetic effect, which can simulate the same thing.

The Swiss firm launched its snow algae extract at the in-cosmetics show which can be used in topical skin care applications, based on this caloric restriction concept.

“In the skin the extract will stimulate the klotho gene, which is an anti-ageing hormone, and it will stimulate AMPK activity. These two activities will delay ageing by activating anti-ageing genes,” says the skin care doctor.
