Effectiveness of skin care products depends on application sequence
Board-certified skin care expert at the American Academy of Dermatology, Susan Taylor, claims that a new study show that the application of serums and lotions can affect how well they work.
"Medications or treatments should be applied directly after washing your face," she said in a statement from the AAD.
"This ensures that the medications or treatments are properly absorbed by the skin. Otherwise, people may think a product isn't working because it's applied in the wrong order."
Sequence of events
Consumers often spend large amounts of money a year on skin care products in an effort to improve the look of their skin.
From anti-aging serums to acne medications, many adults and teens regularly apply medications or treatments to their skin, and now dermatologists are saying that the sequence in which skin care products are applied influences how well the products work.
In ordert to get the most out of a product, Taylor says consumers should apply the cream or lotion to a freshly washed face that has been gently cleansed and dabbed dry.
When applying any cream around the eyes, Taylor says the ring finger is the best option, as it is the weakest finger and will not pull too hard on this delicate skin.
Too much decreases effectiveness
It is also important to distinguish between different stages and applying different products after this, such as moisturisers or make-up.
"It's important for people to know that using several products at the same time may not only negate the benefits of each product but also irritate the skin," said Dr Taylor.
"Using too many products may cause redness, stinging and dryness of the skin, especially if an anti-aging product is included. The signs of aging may then be more noticeable. A dermatologist can address any questions or concerns that you have about caring for your skin."
