Replacing preservatives – a new function for packaging

Current negative opinion surrounding preservatives is leading some brands to try to protect their formulas in different ways, introducing a new role for packaging, according to supplier Promens.

At the recent PCD Congress in Paris, CosmeticsDesign-Europe.com spoke to Promens’ innovation and marketing manager Isabelle Orhan, who explained how packaging could replace preservatives in certain formulations.

Last year at the show Promens was recognised for its DEFI system, developed in partnership with Pierre Fabre, which provides ‘ultimate protection’ for the formula and allows the company’s Avene brand to offer preservative-free products.

While formula protection is something Promens is keen to roll out to many of its other clients, Orhan said this level of sterility and protection is a challenge.

“Sterility and this type of achievement is really complex and requires an intimate coupling between a formula and a packaging,” she said.
