Communicating sustainability to consumers can require a different sort of conversation than the traditional one taken when advertising new products or launches, according to L’Oreal.

Broader sustainable development issues can implicate both the consumer and the manufacturer. In the case of green packaging for example, the use of recyclable, compostable or biodegradable materials will have little effect if the consumer is unaware of how to correctly dispose of it.

Communicating on how to dispose of products can serve to both educate consumers about end of life options, as well as highlighting the use of green material.

In this video L’Oreal’s director of sustainable development Francis Quinn explains some of the approaches taken by the world’s largest cosmetics company.

How to get the most out of sustainable packaging is the subject of a symposium organised by CosmeticsDesign-Europe.com in partnership as part of LuxePack’s educational programme. LuxePack will be held in the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco and runs from Wednesday 20 to Friday 22 October.

‘How to make green packaging the selling point’ will be held on Friday 22 October at 3.15 and will see a panel of experts investigating how brands can use the sustainable nature of their packaging to attract new consumers and improve sales, and the role packaging suppliers play in this process.
