Cognis natural ingredients gain certification

Care Chemicals, the personal care division of ingredients giant
Cognis, has been awarded the Association of German Industries and
Trading firms (BDIH) natural certification.

The award comes for 30 basic and active ingredients in the division's range, endorsing it for use in a range of natural-based personal care products.

The company says that an independent assessor working on behalf of the BDIH classified a range of cosmetic oils, emulsifiers and surfactants from its Care Chemicals division as well as active ingredients from its sister company Laboratories Serobiologique.

Meeting demand for natural products The move ties in with increasing demand from consumers that their personal care products comply with recognised certification programmes that prove both an ingredient's quality and its natural origins.

In line with this and the growing interest in natural personal care products in Germany in particular, the BDIH certification programme already has more than 130 companies that use the seal on its products.

The programme is said to be particularly important for German-speaking markets as it gives businesses targeting this area a competitive advantage.

And not just in Germany But reflecting the increasing importance of the natural certification programmes worldwide, BDIH also points out that approximately 20 per cent of companies adhering to its programme are from outside of Germany.

Cognis says that the fact that this range of ingredients has now met the criteria for the certification programme will actually make things far simpler for formulators.

Previously formulators had to fill out what Cognis describes as a 'lengthy' form that detailed the origins of all the raw materials used in the formulation, a procedure that is now obsolete thanks to the certification of the ingredients.

Green solutions "Our 70 per cent share of natural-based and renewable raw materials and the Green Chemical Solutions classification system allow us to meet this green consumer trend," said Ute Griesbach, senior marketing manager at Cognis.

"The regulation Easy Guide contains lists of the various certified raw materials, which helps our customers when it comes to registering their end products."
