The Chinese pearlescent pigments business Global New Material International (GNMI) has acquired Merck’s Surface Solutions business and rebranded it as ‘Susonity’, as it prepares for global expansion.
GNMI expands global footprint with Merck acquisition
Susonity, which will be headquartered in Gernsheim, Germany, is the market leader in premium effect pigments and active ingredients for automotive, cosmetic, and industrial applications.
Meanwhile, Global New Material International Holdings Limited (GNMI) is one of the largest pearlescent pigment producers and the parent company of the Korea-based company CQV. It is based in Guangxi, China, and listed in Hong Kong.
Susonity aims to accelerate innovation in cosmetics ingredients
With these newly combined capabilities, Susonity now plans to “accelerate scientific innovation and growth to enhance its portfolio for safe, reliable, and sustainable cosmetics ingredients.”
Commenting on the acquisition and future of the business, CEO of Susonity and Chairman & CEO of GNMI, Ertian Su, said the two businesses are highly complementary in terms of their products, expertise, and geographic presence.
“Together, we are strongly positioned to drive growth in a dynamic and fast-evolving market,” said Su. “With this strategic acquisition, Susonity will further expand its global reach and pigment portfolio.”

Strategic growth plans include new regional headquarters
Su said the company will aim to offer a complete range of solutions, from premium, high-end products to large-scale, technology-driven applications.
Susonity already employs approximately 1,100 people worldwide, including over 600 in Germany, and has key manufacturing sites in Germany, Japan, and the US.
As part of its global strategy, the company now plans to establish regional headquarters in EMEA, North America, and Asia Pacific, and has a robust international production footprint.
