At the recent Vitafoods trade show in Barcelona, we hunted down some of the most exciting inside-out beauty innovations shaking up the industry.

Neuro-skin care holy basil

French dermo-cosmetics company Laboratoires Expanscience showcased its first ever nutraceutical active ingredient, Tulsinity Bio, designed to protect the skin from the effects of psychological stress.

It is extracted from tulsi leaves, also known as holy basil, a sacred plant in Ayurvedic medicine known for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and immunostimulant benefits and potential to limit the negative impact of stress.

According to Expanscience, the new ingredient improves the skin’s elasticity, density and skin barrier against daily stress and provides overall well-being.

Skin-firming wild rosehip berries

Botanical ingredients company Finzelberg launched Agilirose Beauty, which is derived from wild rosehip berries and was developed to complement collagen supplements.

The ingredient has anti-inflammatory effects and is made from the skins of wild-growing rosehip berries, which are sustainably hand-picked and gently dried to maintain their bioactive compounds.

According to Dr. Cynthia Suarez-Rizzo, project manager of new product development at Finzelberg, clinical data supports its benefits in skin firmness, structure and elasticity.

Rare Swiss apple stem cells

Mibelle Biochemistry’s PhytoCellTec Md NU is a biotech-created, anti-aging ingredient that is able to rejuvenate and vitalize human skin stem cells.

According to Alice Olufeso, product manager for food and health at Mibelle, the innovation is derived from the cultivated fruit cells of a rare apple variety found in Switzerland and is clinically shown to improve skin density, firmness and elasticity.

Rosemary and grapefruit sun protection

Spanish ingredient supplier Monteloeder by Suannutra showcased its ingestible sun care offering, formulated with a combination of rosemary and grapefruit and designed to help skin develop sun resistance, rather than serve as an alternative to topical sun care.

Nutroxsun is the result of 15 years of collaborative R&D with several universities and research centers to identify natural botanical compounds capable of providing systemic photoprotection.

Monteloeder by Suannutra said that the combination of rosemary and grapefruit extracts clinically demonstrated not only strong individual efficacy but a unique and complementary antioxidant profile, as rosemary contributes lipid-soluble polyphenols like carnosic acid, while grapefruit provides water-soluble flavones.

Eggshell membrane collagen

Stratum Nutrition’s beauty-from-within innovation Ovolux contains eggshell membrane collagen, hyaluronic acid and elastin.

The U.S. company said that a randomized placebo-controlled clinical study showed that the ingredient significantly improves skin firmness, elasticity, plumpness and hydration in men and women in just six weeks and can improve hair texture and health in 12 weeks,

Guggulsterone and konjac-derived ceramides

Vidya’s Kularis is a plant-based formulation designed to treat the ever-growing problem of inflammatory acne in adults.

The ingredient combines 5% ceramides derived from konjac root with 2% guggulsterones, which is a phytosteroid found in the resin of the guggul plant.

Vidya said Kularis targets inflammatory acne lesions while also strengthening the skin barrier with ceramides.
