The company is addressing hair and skin changes that result from estrogen loss.

Bonafide just announced the launch of its newest innovation, Silvessa, a set of products designed to improve the health and appearance of hair and skin  impacted by menopause.

The company, which is focused on taking new and more natural approaches to managing menopause symptoms, said changes to hair and skin are among the top concerns women face during this this lifestage.

“In day-to-day practice, I have found that so many of my patients complain of hair thinning or even bald spots and of course skin changes such as fine lines and wrinkles with age. There is a bit of a disconnect between these concerns and the hormone changes due to menopause.  Once medical issues are ruled out, the connection becomes clear. Women are looking for solutions and hormones are not the answer. Women prefer to consider treatment options without significant side effects. Silvessa is a fantastic option with the science to support it,” explained Dr. Alyssa Dweck, Chief Medical Office at Bonafide.

The toll on hair and skin

Menopause causes estrogen levels to decline which can in turn take a toll on skin and hair health. Low estrogen levels lead to decreased blood flow which prevents access to key nutrients, increased UV sensitivity, and damage from free radicals and oxidative stress. Particularly, a sharp drop in collagen production and increased collagen degradation causes many women to lose 30% of their collagen during the first five years of menopause.

“Bonafide Health focuses its research on the development of products that contain naturally based ingredients that can help provide nutritional support for menopausal women. One area that changes during aging and menopause is hair and skin health.  The decline in estrogen associated with menopause can deprive women of the structural and nutritional support they need for hair and skin, leaving them prone to damage, dullness, and dryness, as well as thinning hair. Silvessa is a daily routine formulated to restore the collagen and nutrients impacted by declining estrogen  — improving the appearance of hair and skin today, and protecting against future damage tomorrow,” said Jim Komorowski, Chief Science Officer at Bonafide.

Three-way system

Silvessa is a daily routine formulated to restore the collagen and nutrients impacted by declining estrogen. It contains three different components to offer bidirectional support by working inside and outside the body. The system includes Strengthening Hair Serum, Hydrating Skin Serum, and Nourishing Daily Capsule.

“Oral supplements can be valuable, but they tend to take a longer time to see benefits. Serums are a great way to provide more rapid visual results until the supplement can take effect and provide long-term benefits. This ‘inside-out’ system approach is becoming more popular, but can be more challenging for the manufacturer to find the best combination of products,” said Komorowski. “Silvessa is a great example of a system where the nutrients in the oral capsule were designed to complement those in the hair and skin serums.”

The capsule contains three key bioavailable nutrients: biotin, silicon, and phycocyanin. Komorowski added that these ingredients have been studied for their individual benefits as well as in combination and have been shown to provide support for the structural components of healthy hair and skin, as well as help defend against future oxidative damage.

The state of menopause

Last July Bonafide released its first State of Menopause Study, which aggregated the symptoms, treatments, and general dispositions of over 1,000 US women ages 40 to 65 in the US.

“While most of these symptoms negatively impact the day-to-day life of menopausal women, 73% of women report they are not currently treating their symptoms and 20% of women experienced such symptoms for 12+ months before even being assessed by an HCP,” noted Dweck.

According to the survey, these symptoms include hot flashes (16%), weight gain (15%), difficulties with sleep (14%), night sweats (14%), and brain fog (10%).

The market

The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists reports that 6,000 US women reach menopause every day and companies are starting to take notice.  The global menopause market size is expected to reach over 22 billion by 2028 and is expected to expand at a CAGR of 5.7% from 2021 to 2028.
