The nutritional supplements company has ventured into beauty, launching 3% thymoquinone black cumin seed oil as a topical skin care active at the start of 2021.

“B’utyQuin is TriNutra’s first skin care ingredient,” company CEO Morris Zelkha tells Cosmetics Design.

“Since cosmetics and nutrition are closely linked in matters of maintaining a healthy body and promoting healthy aging—while also maintaining a youthful appearance,” he explains, “we believe that it makes [a lot of] sense to set up a base for complementary platforms of ingredients to support beauty and health from both the inside and out.”

And so, TriNutra enters the beauty ingredient marketplace here in the US in partnership with Barrington Nutritionals, the ingredient maker’s exclusive distributor in the region.

TriNutra positions B’utyQuin as a healthy aging ingredient for skin care and scalp care

“B’utyQuin is first and foremost an anti-aging active that affects the cell machinery,” says Dr Liki von Oppen-Bezalel, Business Development Director at TriNutra, in her remarks to Cosmetics Design.

“It is able to help boost mitochondrial functions that typically slow down with age,” she says, explaining that, “more specifically, B’utyQuin positively influences energy (ATP) production, respiration and metabolism of cells.”

“B’utyQuin also helps to influence a balanced inflammatory response and has potent antioxidant capacity. Excessive inflammation is a major cause of premature aging, called Inflammaging, within skin and body cells and so having an ingredient that can help the body’s efforts to create balance is vital to maintaining a youthful appearance. All of these processes leave the skin healthier, more vibrant and rejuvenated,” Dr von Oppen-Bezalel tells Cosmetics Design.

And, drawing on her 20+ years of work in in business development, marketing, sales, and R&D for the cosmetics and nutraceuticals market, Dr von Oppen-Bezalel sees a real opportunity for the first TriNutra personal care ingredient in today’s consumer marketplace: “B’utyQuin is an ingredient that addresses some of the basic, key needs currently occurring in the industry due to the pandemic. It fits perfectly with the need for healthy, effective, multifunctional, soothing and calming ingredients for easy-to-use products— that are less time-consuming and that fit into a healthier lifestyle.”

“Cosmetic products are expected to provide hydration, soothing and stress-reducing effects that beautify our appearance and B’utyQuin goes beyond that expectation by also protecting and stimulating the cells’ power-house machinery (the mitochondria) to provide systemic benefits,” she says, noting that these assertions “were naturally demonstrated both in in vitro and clinical settings to help and save time and work for our customers on the road to faster product development.”

TriNutra expects the 3% thymoquinone level will differentiate its black seed oil in the beauty marketplace

That TriNutra has access to Nigella sativa with such a distinction as 3% thymoquinone is no accident.

“We spent years developing a Nigella sativa breeding program here in Israel that could yield varieties with a high concentration of thymoquinone, which is the key active molecule in Nigella sativa seed (black cumin) oil. The result was that our crop yielded 2-3 times the thymoquinone compared to other generic varieties,” Dr von Oppen-Bezalel tells Cosmetics Design.

And she goes on to explain that, “because our Nigella sativa crop already has a higher concentration of thymoquinone, we are able to better preserve the thymoquinone content within the oil. Additionally, our patented cold press extraction process not only helps us to standardize the oil to 3% thymoquinone, but it ensures a lower free fatty acid content. Together, both aspects of B’utyQuin enhance the oil’s ability to function, delivering optimal benefits for healthier and more beautiful skin.”

And there’s more innovation on the way from TriNutra, says Dr von Oppen-Bezalel: “the pulp left from the cold pressed process is being used for the development of additional products that will certainly fit perfectly into the topic of upcycled raw material. So, there is more coming that we have up our sleeves.”
