Continental gelatine associations unite to form global group

Gelatine trade associations from four continents have formed a new global organisation that aims to boost consumer awareness of gelatine’s role in nutraceuticals, joint health and cosmetic applications.

The Gelatine Representatives of the World (GROW) is a new Brussels-based group that combines the activities and resources of the Gelatine Manufacturers of Europe (GME) and Gelatine Manufacturers Institute of America (GMIA).

The two associations are also joined by The Gelatine Manufacturers Association of Asia Pacific (GMAP) and the South American Gelatine Manufacturers Association (SAGMA).

“These associations have a long history of working together on safety and testing aspects of gelatine,” the organisation stated.

“In the interest of customers, consumers and the gelatine industry worldwide, sharing regular information and alignment and the need for effective global communication are clearly essential.

“GROW strives to strengthen dialog between regional gelatine associations in order to ensure safe, natural, and reliable products. GROW also informs, educates and communicates with customers and the media on the benefits of gelatine and collagen peptides.”

Sports nutrition and collagen

Gelatine in the form of collagen peptides have established a niche among a new raft of product launches in the sports nutrition arena.

This natural product is made up of 97% protein (dry weight basis) and its hydrolysed form is said to be behind a number of health benefits including the maintenance of healthy joints, bones and muscles as well as skin.

As a pure protein it can also be used as a main ingredient in weight-loss products such as nutrition bars or diet products.

Ingredient suppliers currently in this space include Rousselot and Gelita, who earlier this year were recognised at the NutraIngredients awards for its ingredient Tendoforte in the sports nutrition category.

Its role in promoting bone and joint health and the upkeep of skin has made collagen peptides a popular choice in the healthy ageing category, where maintenance and preservation are the prime considerations.

“The mission of the worldwide group is to raise awareness of the benefits of gelatine and collagen peptides all around the globe,” said GROW’s chair Greet Hombroux.

“The mission also looks to strengthen the global dialog with stakeholders and ensure safe, natural, and reliable products.”

Along with a commitment to raise awareness of gelatine and collagen peptides as natural and safe products, the organisation also looks to improve analytical methods and global testing standards.

Other areas of focus include fostering free trade of gelatine worldwide and sharing knowledge about new scientific information.
