Clariant launches sugar-based neutraliser
Clariant has introduced what it claims is a ground-breaking step for eco-friendly products in the form of a sugar-based label-free alkaline neutraliser.

Called NeutroTain DMG, the ingredient is said to be an effective tool for formulations in hair dyes, soaps, shaving gels and depilatory creams, mainly because it is so gentle on the skin.

The ingredient has been developed in response to formulators demands for non-irritating natural-based alkaline neutralisers for lower high pH in a wide variety of formulations, particularly sun creams or aqueous and hyrdoalcoholic gels as well as hair care products and those where texture is important.

Delivery sustainability and efficacy

According to the Clariant development team, the ingredient has been developed to deliver both efficiacy as well as eco-friendly credentials, two features that are very important to formulators.

The ingredient has a strong ecotox profile that Clariant claims to exceed any other alkaline neutraliser, while providing high performance for functional claims and also being suitable for novel formulation concepts.

It has been developed from renewable feedstock and is based on 75% sugars, while also have a unique attribute of not requiring any GHS irritant labels.

Ticking all the right boxes

Achieving viscocity and transparency for hydroalcoholic gels, while allowing for less ammonia in hair dye formulations and giving a good sensory profile in soap formulations, the ingredient has a wide variety of specific attributes.

“NeutroTain DMG is a true all-round innovation for formulators and brands because it ticks all the boxes for success It’s naturally-derived,” said Joao Tavares Correia, Head of Region EMEA, Industrial & Consumer Specialties at Clariant.

It’s sustainable. It carries no hazard labels. It performs minimally as well as conventional alternatives. Plus it can be used in multiple applications, and is easy to work with, so it has efficiency benefits too. This alkaline neutralizer fills the gap for cosmetics formulations that answer end-consumer needs and we are looking forward to exploring its potential with the industry.”
