The awards, organised by Cosmetics Design, span a total of ten categories in 2019: five directly related to ingredient and formulation innovation, while the other five categories are showcasing the products that are driving the indie beauty market.
This week, alongside the in-cosmetics Global trade event, Cosmetics Design hosted our annual Beauty Industry Awards ceremony to announce the winners for 2019.
And they are…
Best Skin Care Ingredient: Sensityl – Givaudan Active Beauty
Sensityl is an active cosmetic ingredient that fuses nature and scientific expertise to offer consumers dual benefits on beauty and well-being.
The new patent-pending ingredient was developed in Givaudan’s Marine Biotechnology Centre of Excellence based in Brittany, France.
Sensityl™ is the first of its kind ingredient to positively influence consumers’ mood after just one month of use, owing to its powerful soothing benefits. This taps into the trend we saw on the in-cosmetics Global showfloor this year of beauty that responds to and influences user’s emotions.
Best Color Cosmetics Ingredient: Chione Electric Fuchsia SF90D – BASF Colors & Effects
Chione Electric Fuchsia is a carmine-free effect pigment, meeting rising demand for vegan and clean beauty while maintaining high performance colour cosmetics.
Chione Electric Fuchsia represents a disruptive innovation advance in effect pigment technology, the company says.
“Utilizing precise control of multiple metal oxide layers, our scientists were able to create a pigment with superior coverage and chroma, in a unique blue red color space,” noted Gabe Uzunian, Head, Development and Expert Services, Cosmetic Effect Pigments at BASF.
“This patent-pending technology opens the boundaries in the red color space using an inorganic approach with all the associated stability benefits.”
Best Sensory Ingredient: Dowsil EP-9610 Cosmetics Powder - Dow
A soft powder that provides unique smooth, bouncy and silky feel with optical effect and sebum control with easy processing for Color Cosmetics and Skin Care products.
“Consumers are looking for soft and silky products that feel velvety on their skin without tackiness or clumping. Elastomer powders provide that special sensory feel, but agglomeration issues lead to processing challenges,” the company says.
“Dowsil EP-9610 Cosmetic Powder offers the best of both worlds – softness with less agglomeration.”
Best Hair Care Ingredient: Darkenyl - Givaudan Active Beauty
The second major win of the night for Givaudan, Darkenyl is a repigmenting active ingredient inspired from the latest stem cell research.
Darkenyl boosts hair stem cells proliferation (+30%) and migration to help the hair matrix with new melanocytes.
Its antioxidant properties enable the reduction of free radical damage in hair follicles (-53%) and also helps to protect existing melanocytes (+189%).
Once the hair matrix has been repopulated with new melanocytes and both new and existing melanocytes are protected from ROS, Darkenyl delivers its melanin synthesis precursor to reactivate melanogenesis (+364%).
Best Use of an Ingredient in a Finished Product: Quora Noni PRCF – Vytrus Biotech
Described by the company as ‘the new anti-acne mechanism of action’, Quora Noni helps the microbiota of acne-prone skin rebalance.
It is the concentrated metabolome of totipotent cells from Noni which is rich in Anti-Quorum Sensing molecules (Anti-Quormones) specially designed for “dermohacking”: to act synergistically against Quorum Sensing mediated microbial dysbiosis while perfecting the skin appearance.
Best Indie Beauty Brand: Esse Skincare
Esse is based on the claim that ‘live probiotics can help to optimise skin health’. Its product range features award-winning biotech skin care solutions with certified organic, vegan formulations
Best Indie Color Cosmetic: Shine Filtro FPS 50 FPUVA 30 – Pink Cheeks
Pink Cheeks had two products shortlisted in this category, and its sports-focused cosmetics powder came out on top.
Best Indie Skin Care: Glacial Melting Cleanser – AO Skincare
AO Skincare triumphed across the board in this indie skin care category, with three of its products taking the three top spots as finalists. In the end, it was its cleanser product that came out as overall winner.
Best Indie Hair Care: Mavros R Hair Anti-greying Package - Renorigin Innovation Institute
With anti-ageing and healthy ageing still major hot topics for the industry, it’s perhaps no surprise that this Mavros R came out on top with its anti-greying package for hair care.
Best Microbiome-related Brand: Face Vinegar - Gallinée
It’s been a busy time for this indie beauty brand over the past few years, with the company winning awards and taking a leading role in the fast-evolving skin microbiome-related category. Galliné’s face vinegar won this category.
