Clariant inks deal with Indonesian manufacturer to enhance natural offerings
Speciality chemical company Clariant has entered a partnership with PT Martina Berto, an Indonesian cosmetics manufacturer, to tap into the company’s expertise in South East Asian plant-based ingredients.

As part of the deal, Clariant will use its international network to market 12 innovation products from Martina Berto.

The latter specialises in South East Asian fruits and flowers such as Sariayu Putih Langsat and Mangosteen, which have since become ingredients in personal care products

“We’re very excited about this very important agreement today with PT Martina Berto, Tbk. Our collaboration is based on our common enthusiasm for 100% natural ingredients and to make use of the great biodiversity of Indonesia,” said Francois Bleger, Head of Clariant Business Unit Industrial and Consumer Specialty, Asia Pacific Region.

“We will further strengthen our position towards sustainable ingredients and boost our natural based innovations.”

Jumping on naturals

With this new agreement, Clariant and Martina Berto, who have been cooperating since 2015, have entered a new level of collaboration.

The agreement is in line with Clariant’s personal care strategy to expand portfolio of natural ingredients.

Clariant shared that it was confident in enhancing its place in the industry as a “nature expert” with Martina Berto providing expertise on South East Asian, especially Indonesian biodiversity.

The partnership also affirms the company’s commitment to ethical sourcing, Clariant added.

Clariant has already had successful collaborations with companies such as Beraca, which sources ingredients from Amazonian rainforests of Brazil, as well as BioSpectrum, a South Korean manufacturer which develops natural ingredients based on natural prodcuts.

According to a report by Grand View Research, the global organic personal care market size is projected to reach $25.11bn by 2025, expanding at a CAGR of 9.5% during the forecast period.

Green commitment

Martina Berto prides itself on its strong commitment to the environment and sustainability. Its Green Movement Program partners with the local Indonesian farming community by guiding and educating them on utilising natural resources in a sustainable manner.

“Since its establishment, Martina Berto has focused on producing innovative cosmetic products by combining wisdom of local culture and research carried on various Medicinal, Cosmetic and Aromatic (MAC) plants from nature,” Martha Tilaar Group in a statement.

The parent company of Martina Berto added that it was fully committed to producing quality products with Indonesia’s rich biodiversity.

"Indonesia second largest natural resource in the world after Brazil, but has not been used optimally,” said President and Director of Martina Berto, Bryan Tilaar. “It is the vision and mission of Martha Tilaar Group to utilise Indonesia's natural wealth so that it can produce quality products innovated by the nation's children.”
