Cannabis beauty: How to stay on the right side of the law!
Cosmoprof North America opens its doors in Las Vegas on Sunday, which is also the same day of the event’s not-to-be missed educational session ‘High On Beauty: The Cannabis Dilemma'.

The 90-minute panel discussion will look at all aspects of incorporating various elements of cannabis into beauty and personal care products, with a particular focus on the key are of regulation and claims.

Ahead of the session, we spoke to panelist Ronie Schmelz, Councel at Tucker Ellis LLP, to find out a bit more about the role she will be playing during the panel discussion, as well as laying down a few important points for any business before getting involved in this fast evolving area.

Why should attend the session?

With the increasing interest in skin care products that incorporate cannabis-based formulations Schmelz has found that there has been a corresponding rise in the number of clients seeking to clarify how they might stand with respect to the regulations governing this area.

“Anybody interested in understanding the legal and regulatory landscape surrounding use of cannabis in products,” Schmelz said in explaining who would benefit from attending the session.

“They will learn the regulatory enforcement attitudes of various branches of the federal government, the status of state laws legalizing marijuana, and come away with an understanding of the risks that attach to this growing category of consumer products.”

Incorporating cannabis-based ingredients into beauty products remains a relatively new trend and as the formulation solutions evolve, brands are invariably finding themselves in a position of trying to discover the basic elements, and what types of formulation technology exist.

The panel of experts will be sharing their experience in this area, discussing what formulations options are out there, as well as defining the some of the basic elements.

“I think most consumers and businesses are confused by the seemingly interchangeable use of the terms marijuana, hemp, and CBD. Each of these terms mean something slightly different and it’s important to understand that not all products containing these ingredients are illegal,” .
