New Avon, the investor-owned US element of the social-selling company, is running a summer marketing initiative (and circulating press materials) that highlight the disease prevention benefits of its Bug Guard sprays and lotions.

At the start of July, Avon posted a media release titled (in part) “Avon Skin So Soft Bug Guard Collection-Protects Against Lyme Disease.”

Summarizing the campaign, Debi Theis, vice president in charge of merchant, marketing, and product development at New Avon LLC., explains, “Bug-transmitted illnesses like Lyme disease are always a cause for serious concern this time of year.”

“It's important to focus on tick prevention and protective care against bugs and bites so adults and children can continue to enjoy outdoor activities. With Avon's Skin So Soft Bug Guard formulas, consumers can rest assured that they're experiencing maximum insect repellency through formulas that are safe for the whole family.”

Regional alert

Avon press materials about the Bug Guard campaign cite data from the US Centers for Disease Control that indicate Lyme disease is more common in Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, and Wisconsin than it is in the other 36 states.

And the company’s Bug Guard line of products are formulated to keep ticks and other disease carrying insects away from people. “Avon's full collection of Skin So Soft Bug Guard insect repellent and DEET-free bug sprays and lotions are designed to offer protection against Lyme disease-carrying deer ticks, mosquitoes, gnats, no-seeums, sand flies and biting midges,” explains the press release.

The products also promise to protect against “mosquitoes that may carry and transmit the Zika, West Nile, Dengue, and Chikungunya viruses.”

Avon has seven products in the collection. Two formulated with sun care benefits: Bug Guard Plus IR2424 Expedition Pump Spray SPF 30, and Bug Guard Plus IR2424 Expedition Aerosol Spray SPF 28; three formulated for use at dawn or dusk: Bug Guard Plus Picaridin Pump Spray, Bug Guard Plus Picaridin Towelettes, and Bug Guard Plus Aerosol Spray; and two formulated to be water resistant which also have sun care benefits: Bug Guard IR3535 Gentle Breeze SPF 30 Lotion, and Bug Guard IR3535 Cool 'N Fabulous SPF 30 Lotion Disappearing Color.
