With the trend still dominant and impacting on every corner of the beauty market, we take a look at some of the key areas of innovation and potential for naturals and organics from 2017.

Allergy-free: a direction for the trend?

Lene Stiil, co-founder of skin allergy product certification body AllergyCertified, suggested in a recent exclusive interview with us that allergy-free claims may be where the trend is heading.

Natural does not equal skin friendly when it comes to cosmetics and make-up,” she asserts.

Natural cosmetics can be skin friendly, but it is important that you know your INCI and have access to information about the botanicals used in the natural product.”

Biotech’s potential

In its recent reveal of top trends set to define the beauty industry in 2018, market research firm Mintel says biotech will have an increasingly important role to play in the naturals and organic segment.

The concept of natural beauty ingredients is expanding in an ever-changing world, suggests Mintel, and from next year, brands will meet this demand using local approaches and developments in biotechnology.

In the coming year, the possibilities for creating safe, allergen-free, pure, and efficacious ingredients through science could replace the harvesting of natural ingredients.

Local sourcing and production of ingredients will become essential in the years ahead, strengthening the idea of local pride—not just with brands and manufacturers, but with consumers too.”

Does natural mean better?

Maria Coronado, Senior Ingredients Analyst with market research provider Euromonitor and Doctor in Chemical Engineering, recently gave her exclusive insights on how the naturals trend relates to the fragrance segment.

The use of natural ingredients in formulations does not necessarily mean that the product is more sustainable, environmentally friendly or has less allergenic potential, it only means that it comes from nature,” she said.

The allergenic potential of an ingredient depends on the properties of the ingredient itself and its interaction with other ingredients in the formulation rather than the source of the ingredient (natural or synthetic).” Find her full insights here.
