SCC annual scientific meeting and tech showcase preview

The National Society of Cosmetic Chemists will host its annual program in December at a new venue in NYC. This week, Cosmetics Design spoke with Anna Langerveld, the organization’s 2017 chair, to find out what’s in the works for this year’s two-day event.

This year’s event is set to take place December 11th and 12th at the Westin New York at Times Square. A new venue, a new board organizing the event, and early bird pricing (that lasts through the end of the month) have people looking forward to the annual meeting with renewed enthusiasm.

On the agenda

Over 30 experts are scheduled to speak at this year’s National SCC scientific meeting and technology showcase, among them Lei (Stanley) Qi, assistant professor of bioengineering at Stanford University; Debbie Alexander, director of business development at consumer genomics company 23andMe; Richard S. Blackburn, founder of UK-based hair die maker Keracol Limited; Estelle Loing, global R&D director for Lucas Meyer Cosmetics; and Jennifer Marsh, P&G’s vice president and general manager for North America feminine care.

Skin biology researcher Elaine Fuchs will give this year’s keynote address. Fuchs is the Rebecca C. Lancefield professor or mammalian cell biology and development at the Rockefeller University and an investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (a post she’s held since 1988).

Fuchs will address the SCC annual scientific meeting attendees at 10:30am on Monday, December 11. And, “her lecture will focus on her latest work in the field of skin stem cells, how these stem cells replenish dying cells within the skin, how they become mobilized to repair wounds, and how they acquire mutations that will ultimately lead to skin cancer,” —this according to promotional materials Anna Langerveld, 2017 chair of the National SCC and president and CEO of Genemarkers, shared with Cosmetics Design.

Current and custom

Tuesday, December 12, a session called e-cosmetics is expected to be quite compelling, Langerveld says. That session will feature Yulia Park, group manager of regulatory affairs at Amway; Ujjwal Sinha, founder of Management Foresight; and Daniel Japiassu, CEO of YDreams Global; as well as a speaker from non-profit research institute SRI.

And the full two-day program is divided in to two tracks: one for ‘advanced’ attendees, seasoned professionals, and one filled with ‘basic’ level sessions for early career chemists, students, and the like.
