Meitu launches augmented reality beauty to its app with Clinque, Bobbie Brown, YSL and more
The MakeupPlus is one of the core apps offered by global beauty app player Meitu. Meitu has been leading the way in mobile beauty experiences since 2008, with the company’s apps used by more than 450 million monthly active users worldwide, generating an average of 6 billion photos and videos each month.
The MakeupPlus app uses facial recognition and augmented reality technology to allow users to virtually try on trending makeup looks and products from leading brands, with its new counter function featuring brands such as Bobbi Brown, Charlotte Tilbury, Clinique, and YSL.
Consumers learn how to bring the in-app looks into the real world using curated makeup tips, content and video tutorials. The app is available on both Apple and Google Play stores for free.
Core tech
Meitu’s core apps are the MakeupPlus interface, its Airbrush app, allowing smartphone users to do professional-grade manual photo touchups, and BeautyPlus, which offers a one-touch instant retouch on users’ photos or selfies. The company also has a dedicated app offering for the Chinese market.
According to Meitu, its products are facilitated by three core areas of technology: patented facial-recognition, augmented reality technology, and cloud services and big data.
“Meitu’s patented M-Face facial recognition technology includes 171 positioning points - our products learn every detail of your face for precise retouching,” the company states.
“By pairing our patented facial recognition with advanced Augmented Reality technology, users can test realistic makeup looks, products and techniques in an instant.
“Our technology is supported by deep learning, big user data and rich user feedback – providing personalized recommendations, targeted ads and smart customer service while collecting and saving an enormous amount of data in real time.”
