Can we re-engineer synthetic cosmetics products into natural versions?
Ahead of a new Open Academy for the industry in Europe, we caught up with one of the speakers on the hunt for natural alternative, and how one new technological advancement may be able to help.

Jørgen Gade Hyldgaard, Hygade, Denmark, is set to present on the topic ‘Searching for alternative, natural ingredients using Solubility Parameter Technology’ during the upcoming Open Academy, due to be held in October in Barcelona, Spain and organised by the Cosmetics Consultants Europe industry association.

We caught up with him for a sneak preview of the presentation.

Can you give an overview of what you’re presenting on at the CCE academy event?

The presentation will demonstrate uses of Solubility Parameter Technology for searching and optimizing present and alternative preservatives, emulsifiers and emollients for cosmetic product development.

Why would you say the hunt for natural ingredients is particularly topical and relevant at this time?

Many cosmetic developers and producers are now striving to ex. re-engineer traditional cosmetic products to natural cosmetic products – or to speed up the process from idea to market of new products. We have experienced how Solubility Parameter Technology is relevant to consider in this connection – and for stabilizing products.

What are the Europe-specific implications, and is this trend relevant to the industry on a global scale too?

This is world-wide relevant. We gave a poster on this topic at the IFSCC conference in Orlando November 2016.

How do you think the situation is likely to progress from here in the coming period?

According to what we’ve seen at IFSCC, In-Cosmetics, Sepawa, SCS formulate and more, a rising number of new natural raw materials with nice documentation are entering the market these years. This will positively influence the possibility to market new natural, well documented cosmetic products for the consumers to the market the coming years.

It is the idea of Hygade to educate and grow the next generation of cosmetic Chemists (in Scandinavia) – and such elegant use of technology is an important part of this.
