The Cosmetics Compact is your compact source of the latest new headlines from the last few weeks, taking a glance at what has been happening in the cosmetics industry.

Whether in your lunch break, on your commute, or proudly displayed in your office, the compact is a great way to catch up on some of the highlights of the last few weeks.

We start with some news Beiersdorf’s announcement that it will discontinue its Nivea Travel Retail activities in Europe describing the region’s shopping environment as ‘not favourable’.

More news from global markets and much has been made of the economic slowdown in China and how this could affect business. However having spoken with market analyst firm Moody’s they tell us there shouldn’t be too much concern for cosmetics manufacturers.

Next up, and at a time when the cosmetics industry has been accused of ‘greenwashing’, the Soil Association says that the only way the sector is going to grow is if we have consistency in the language we use.

Moving on to the topic of microbeads, and a new study suggests that an outright ban on the common use of plastic ‘microbeads’ from products that enter wastewater is the best way to protect water quality, wildlife, and resources.

Folowing in the footsteps of many other cosmetics players, Clarins also tells us that it is in the process of phasing in new formulations containing alternatives, ‘as quickly as possible.’

And finally, some good and bad from the advertising world, after UK watchdog, the Advertising Standards Authority, sided with MAC over its Viva Glam campaign, but against P&G in its Nicen’ Easy hair dye advertising.
