Swallowfield develops an aerosol spray dispenser for body butters
UK-based cosmetic contract manufacturer claims to be the first company to develop an aerosol dispenser that can be used with body butters.

Creating a spray for a liquid-based formulations with high viscosity has traditionally posed a significant problem for use in conjunction with dispensing technologies, and this is something that has posed an even bigger problems for aerosols.

Although aerosols for body oils and moisturisers do existing and are ever supplied by Swallowfield, butter-based formulations tend to have am higher viscosity, posing a bigger challenge for the development team.

Targeting growing demand for body butters

The company says it developed the aerosol for butters to target a high growth area of the market, which was the main incentive behind its development.

The design of the new aerosol ensures that the body butter formulation is easily and cleanly dispensed, but with the added advantage that the formulation need never be exposed to the elements.

A standard jar for a body butter means that the lid has to be opened every time it is used, exposing the formulation to the elements and increasing the likelihood that it will become contaminated, which could potentially reduce the product lifespan.

The trick is to change the behaviour of the formulation

The body butter formulation combines shea butter with passion flower oil and there plans to develop a who line, while the new aerosol has been developed using with a new material, which when sprayed serves to thin out the shea butter.

“Just as tomato ketchup becomes thinner when you shake it, the aerosol and formulation changes the behaviour of the body butter so that it can be sprayed,” said Victoria Houghton, development management at Swallowfield.

The aerosol packaging comes has been designed to be 100% recyclable and is available in 75ml, 100ml, 150ml and 200ml sizes.
