in-cosmetics hosts IFSCC nanotechnology workshop
Before the doors open for next week’s in-cosmetics event in Hamburg, the organisers are hosting an IFSCC workshop focusing on the latest advances in the area of nanotechnology.

On 31st March, the day before in-cosmetics opens to the public, the Hamburg Messe will also be the venue for the workshop, which will look at the future of nano ingredients – a topic that presents incredible advances for formulators, but also raises concerns over safety.

The workshop has been organized around EU regulation 1223/2009/WE, which has been enacted by the European Union to provide the means to adequately measure the particle size suitable to fulfil the nanomaterial definition, as well as safety studies and evaluation methods.

The workshop will be led by IFSCC vice president, Claudie Willemin, who will be chairing the event and introducing a total of four speakers, each specialising in different areas, from regulation to research and product development.

Speakers from research, product development and regulation

Those speakers will include Dr. Florian Schellauf, Technical Regulatory Affairs, Cosmetics Europe; Dr. Robert Landsiedel, Product Safety, Experimental Toxicology and Ecology – BASF; Prof. Jürgen Lademann, Center of Experimental and Applied Cutaneous Physiology, Department of Dermatology, University of Medecin; and Dr. Hubert Rauscher, European Commission, Joint Research Centre, Nanobiosciences Unit.

The workshop starts at 2pm with an introduction by Willemin, which will then be followed by Dr. Schellauf’s presentation, entitled Nanotechnology – Current Status in EU and other Countries.

This presentation will focus on the new EU regulation governing nanotechnology, underling the obligations of transparency to the consumer and the fact that any formulation containing nanoparticles must be registered under the regulation.

A total of four presentations

The other three presentations will include the titles Concern-Driven Integrated Approaches to Nanomaterial Testing and Assessment by Dr. Landsiel, Nanomaterials’ Safety: A Summary of the Latest Studies, by Prof Lademann, and Characterisation Methods for Nanomaterials for Regulatory Purposes, by Dr. Rauscher.

The presentations will culminate at 5:30pm with a half hour question and answers session for the presenters, which will be rounded up by a conclusion from Willemin.

The nanotechnology workshop is part of a total of seven workshops that will be held during the course of in-cosmetics, including: The Animal Testing Ban, Developing Paraben-Free Preservatives, Rethinking Anti-Ageing, Sustainable Claim Substantiation, What’s New In Hair Care.
