A Birmingham-based retailer has been fined £8,400 for selling “deadly” cosmetics to consumers.

Shakeel Arathil, the manager of the business, pleaded guilty to six counts of supplying goods banned under consumer safety regulations.

The Sparkhill superstore Golden’s International Limited allegedly included in its stock 45 hair dye and skin creams containing lead or mercury, which could have put customers’ lives at risk.

Birmingham Trading Standards officer Adam O’Donnell said concerning the sentence: “there is a problem with banned items imported from Asia and the Middle East being sold in stores targeting Asian and black customers.”

“These products are banned in Europe, but continue to be used by rogue manufacturers and sold to a market of mainly Asian women.”
