According to analysts Transparency Market Research, global demand for organic personal care products was over $7.6 (€5.8) billion in 2012 and is expected to reach $13.2 (€10.1) billion by 2018, growing at a CAGR of 9.6 per cent.

The report, "Organic Personal Care Products Market for Skin Care, Hair Care, Oral Care and Cosmetics - 2012 - 2018,​" notes the market as witnessing steady growth in recent years due to increasing a rise in consumer incomes, lifestyle changes and an increasing awareness and demand for organic personal care products.

Widening distribution channels and new product developments are also pinpointed as contributing to the market growth while challenges are revealed to be a limited shelf-life, raw material supply and a stringent regulatory scenario over the next five years. 

Breakdown of countries seeing success

In terms of organic personal care product consumption, the market researcher says Europe and Asia Pacific follow close behind North America in first place which accounted for 34.8 per cent of global demand in 2011, driven by new product launches and widening distribution channels.

"The U.S. was the largest market for organic personal care products followed by Japan and Germany. The U.S. demand for organic products is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 10.2 per cent from 2012 to 2018. Strong awareness about the efficacy of organic personal care products and lifestyle changes are key drivers in this region​."

In the AP region, the analyst highlighted Japan and China as dominating the market, together accounting for over 64 per cent market revenue in 2011, while countries such as India, China, Brazil and Mexico were pinpointed as having huge market opportunities for organic personal care products.

The segments dominating the organic markets

According to the market researcher, skin care products dominated demand in the global organic personal care products market in 2011, with a 32.1 per cent share, followed by hair care and cosmetics segments.

"In terms of revenue, the market for organic skin care products is expected to grow at a rate of 9.9 per cent from 2012 to 2018."

The report futher indicates that demand for these segments increased due to the entry of large multinationals in the personal care products space giving them tremendous visibility and increasing their accessibility across varied consumer segments.

"These segments will dominate the market in the coming years and brands leading the way here are the likes of Bare Escentuals, Aveda, Burt's Bee, Origins, Kiehls, and The Body Shop​."
