Germany-based hot and cold stamping specialist Leonhard Kurz has launched an updated high tech counterfeiting solution for packaging that also provides special effect branding opportunities.

The company has improved its diffraction authentication technology, Trustseal, by fitting the Optical Variable Device (OVD) with three new technologies that makes it capable of defeating sophisticated counterfeiters, while also providing a new element called Latent Photo that provides branding and imaging opportunities.

Firstly, the new addition of its PM Premium technology means that a simulated raised surface, combined with more diffractive elements and transparent areas provides an outstanding level of protection against forgery, while also integrating sophisticated metallised as a grid.

Latent Photo technology

Likewise, the technology now also incorporates Latent Photo, which displays a grey-scale gradient image under normal viewing conditions, but when turned upwards, or seen from an oblique angle, the image then displays vibrant colours.

At this second viewing angle, it is also possible to display another coloured image, which could be a logo or a product associated image that can only be seen at this viewing point, creating additional marketing opportunities for brand owners as well as providing a counterfeiting measure

The company says that any type of graphic image or photo can be integrated into the Latent Photo, including celebrity images, brand logos, or images that convey the functionality of the products.

The Bottle Neck technology

Kurz has also added a third technology to the Trustseal line up, the Bottle Neck, which has been specially designed for easy application of labels and seals that are applied to cylindrical shapes – an area that often poses added challenges for packaging designers to work around.

The company says that when its OVD systems are applied to curved areas, such as a bottle neck, the full effect of the opalescent, diffractive décor can only be seen on a narrow strip of the area.

However, this new diffractive Bottle Neck structures have been designed so that the décor appears in a clear and colourful way over the whole width, while also allowing the consumer to see the product information a glimpse.
