SCCS rules eyelash dyes can pose as a health risk

The European Union's Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety is warning about the risks of applying dyes and hydrogen peroxide to eyelashes.

The Committee has highlighted ten dyes; A5, A12, A16, A17, A44, A53, A79, A80, A94 and A132 as having the potential to irritate the eyes, and although beauty professionals normally apply these type of products, they are concerned about consumers applying the products themselves at concentrations above levels recommended by manufacturers.

The SCCS also highlighted the use of hydrogen peroxide to change eyelash colour in concentrations of up to 2 per cent, considering it "safe for the consumer”, but that anything over that concentration; “may be slightly irritant to the eye.”

The announcement comes after the dyes were approved for adoption by the Committee in its most recent plenary meeting and were open for comments by applicants, national authorities and other interested parties up until last month.
