The Society of Cosmetic Scientists is to meet to discuss the latest good and bad science shaping the future of cosmetics at its 5th annual scientific symposium next week (30- 31st May), at Trinity College in Dublin.

According to the SCS, cosmetic products have been an easy target for skeptics of late, as misinformation being more widely available than ever with the industry experiencing how bad science or the bad reporting of science can have massive consequences.

This year Dublin has been awarded the ‘European city of Science,’ thus the reason for the venue of this year’s symposium for the cosmetic chemists.

Industry professionals from the likes of L'Oreal, Marks and Spencer, Oriflame, Estee Lauder, PZ Cussons and Croda are among cosmetic companies already registered to attend.

Author of ‘Bad Science” Ben Goldacre who specializes in “unpicking dodgy scientific claims from drug companies, newspapers and government reports,” is also due to join this year’s symposium to explore how the cosmetic industry can guard itself against the perils of bad science.

According to the SCS, Goldacre has helped expose some of the worst science currently in the public domain and believes that unpicking bad science is the best way to explain good science.

Keynote speakers are to include Paul Roche director of the Faulkes Telescopes Project and Francis Quinn of L'Oréal, with Quinn touching on the biomimetic materials and composite polymers area, from his experience in the industry.

The final section of the event is set to look at some of the current good science influencing the industry including an insight into how L’Oreal are helping to maintain a beautiful world while still helping to shape the future of cosmetic science.
