Plastic packaging GMP guideline released

The Society of the Plastics Industry (SPI) said the document has been put together to help those responsible for ensuring company adherence to GMP principles.

The industry body stressed the guide does not seek to establish a GMP programme specific to any particular facility. Rather it is intended to be a general reference tool for firms and facilities operating throughout the packaging supply chain – from resin manufacturers to packaging converters.

Useful tool​

To maxmise its efficacy, the guide was developed by sector experts from the body’s members on its Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Packaging Materials Committee representing links along the entire plastic packaging chain.

“This document presents topics and areas that should be considered in development of a GMP program for a variety of plastic food packaging companies and facilities -- from resin manufacturer through packaging converter,”​ said Kyra Mumbauer, SPI director of industry affairs – for food, drug and cosmetic packaging and consumer issues. “Because the Guideline was developed by industry representatives who are themselves responsible for GMP programs, I am confident that the document will be a useful tool for anyone developing a GMP program for their own facility.” ​

The concept of good manufacturing practice underpins the manufacture of all products regulated by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Food and food packaging must be produced under a GMP programme that prevents contamination and ensures products will be safe.

There is no universal solution but instead well-designed GMP plans will inevitably vary according to type of product manufactured and its position in the process and supply chain, said the SPI.

The 11-page document lays out the areas a good GMP programme should cover, including hygiene, flow of operations, produce security and traceability as well as management issues.
