Guidelines for the use of three cosmetic ingredients given by China SFDA

As it strives to improve the safety of cosmetic products and attempt to standardize technical requirements for ingredients, China State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) has released guidance on safe use conditions and testing methods of ethanol , talc and glycerin.

According to the new guidelines, concentration percentage of ethanol, which is often used as an antimicrobial agent or fragrance ingredient, should be no less than 95 percent at 20°C (v/v) in the cosmetic product and volume percentage of methanol in ethanol should be no more than 0.2 percent (v/v).

In regard to the relatively low hazard ingredient, talc, the guidance demands that the powdered product should be kept away from one's mouth and nose as far as possible during production and use, and producers must also make sure that asbestos should not be detected from the compositions of the ingredient.

Concentration percentage of glycerin, used in a variety of skin, hair and oral care applications, should be no less than 95 percent at 20°C(v/v) and volume percentage of diglycol in glycerin should be no more than 0.1 percent (v/v).
