Ingredients provider Symrise is ramping up production of fragrance at its Holzminden site by investing in new production facilities.

The Germany-based company says it is aiming to centralise the production of fragrance oil at the facility by investing in two sets of new dosing and mixing facilities to meet increased demand.

Recent financial results have shown that expansion of the company’s personal care operations has outpaced that for the flavours side of the business, and in particular sales of perfume oils have been a real driving force.

“In the first half of 2010 sales for the scent and care division increased by 20 per cent, growth that has driven up volumes, in turn stretching our production capacity to the limit,” Bernhard Kott, spokesperson for Symrise, told CosmeticsDesign-Europe.com.

Demand for perfume oils puts pressure on production

“This part of the business has grown at double the expansion rate for the market as a whole in recent years, putting pressure on our production capacity and making the investment in the facilities a necessity.”

The €5m investment to expand the facilities will see the creation of 30 new jobs and specifically targets the supply of perfume oils to the EAME region, which includes the whole of Europe, the Middle East and Africa, together with other key markets worldwide.

The new equipment comprises two new fully automatic dosing machines, a production dosing system for additional raw materials, together with a 1,000-element dosing system, which the company claims will guarantee precise mixing of perfume oils.

As well as dosing accuracy, the new equipment will serve to enhance production efficiency by ensuring a 90 per cent automation rate, together with a 25 per cent increase in the production capacity.

Increasing lead position in perfume oils

The expansion aims to build on the company’s leading position in the worldwide perfume oil business. Currently Symrise estimates that it produces approximately one third of the world’s supply of perfume oils.

The production facility itself process over 2,000 different raw materials during the perfume oil production process, which are used in scents for the fragrance, body care and household product markets.

“Through the optimal exploitation of our capacities, we are also implementing our strategy to prosper substantially under our own steam – an important foundation for our long-term business success,” said Dr. Heinz-Jürgern Bertram.
