Worlée launches exfoliating beads with defined particle size distribution

Germany-based raw materials supplier, Worlée-Chemie, has recently launched a line of exfoliating beads with a defined particle size distribution.

Made from 100 per cent hydrogenated jojoba oil (jojoba wax), the WorléeBeads are available in 11 different colours and can be used as exfoliants in rinse-off products such as shower gels and cleansers, the company said.

Defined particle size distribution

Steven Hausmann from Worlée’s Cosmetics division, explained to CosmeticsDesign-Europe.com that a new technology developed by the company makes it possible to produce a defined particle size distribution, which is something similar products do not have.

“A lot of similar products made from wax have a high amount of small, powder like particles, and the problem with these is that they can influence the colour of the final cosmetic product,” ​he said.

Unlike other common exfoliants such as polyethylene powders or nut shell particles that can irritate the skin due to their sharp edged surface, WorléeBeads have a smooth surface, and so are softer on the skin, he said.

“Furthermore, the coloured beads are better recognised in the final product as coloured spots,” ​he added.

Patented production process

The beads are produced in the presence of a catalyst, where hydrogen is attached to the double-bond of the unsaturated fatty acids of the Jojoba oil. The unsaturated fatty acids then become saturated and 100 per cent hydrated esters of jojoba oil result.

“Due to the new patented production process, we achieve a defined particle size of 20/60 mesh for coloured beads and 60/100 mesh for white beads,” ​stated Hausmann.

As the beads are made from jojoba oil, they are suitable for use in ‘green’ products, and jojoba has several positive properties, including protecting against dehydration, an anti-inflammatory effect, and being almost entirely odourless, he said.

The company says that different colours can be mixed together to produce the shade desired, and other colours are available on request. However, the company cautioned that the Ultramarine blue pigment is ‘sometimes unstable’ in products with a pH value of less than 7, as the pigment may decompose.
