Germany-based specialty chemicals player Cognis is unveiling a number of new ingredients at the 56th SEPAWA congress, geared towards the consumer trend for green products.

The conference, which is a platform for the chemicals industry and took place in Wurzburg, Germany from Ocober 14 – 16, also served as a means for the company to present its latest offerings in the fields of high performance polymers, additives, emulsions and dispersions.

Cognis says that its new ingredients ranges face up to increasing challenges for formulators to provide effective ingredients that enhance sensory qualities, while avoiding harsh chemicals that may impact either the environment or consumer well-being.

Meeting these requirements means that ingredients for personal care formulation now have to be developed around these criteria, which often makes for a more complex and time consuming development process.

Formulators need ingredients that are easy to combine

However, when it comes to the criteria that formulators are looking for the requirement is anything but complex. Indeed, ingredients have to be easy to combine while maintaining their efficacy.

Bearing this in mind the company has developed a range of hair and skin care products focused on consumer well-being and eco-friendly characteristics, including the Cosmedia Triple C, a PEG/EO-free dispersion polymer developed for care products with a particular focus on enhanced sensory qualities.

Feel was a priority with this range, and the company says its sensory qualities make it ideal for both wet and dry hair formulations, while generating improved viscosity in both skin care and hair care formulations.

Emulsifier effective at low concentrations

The company’s new anionic O/W emulsifier, Eumuglin is said to be ideal for sun care formulas, mainly because it is so effective in low concentrations, while also having excellent compatibility with the electrolytes and pigments that are an important part of sun cream formulas.

The EcocerPlantasil Micro is transparent microemulsion that is Ecocert registered and is mainly targeted at the shampoo category thanks to its enhanced conditioning properties. It is based on natural surfactant-oil system and is ideal for clear formulations.

The final ingredient in the portfolio of new products is Lamesoft Care, a high-performance wax dispersion aimed at providing enhanced conditioning characteristics to both skin care and hair care formulations.

Presentation highlights efficacy of Lamesoft Care

During a presentation at the congress, the company highlighted a new study, showing that hair care formulas containing Lamesoft Care offer improved protection against hair breakage compared to silicon-based formulations.

The event also served as a platform for the company to highlight its Green Formulations Set, a tool that demonstrates how companies can use simple formulations to produce products that comply with all the big certification bodies, including NaTrue, BDIH and EU Ecolabel certifications.

In the same vein, the company also highlighted its Polymer Formulation Set at the event, demonstrating how formulations such as Rheocare TTA can be used to provide stability in a wide range of personal care products.
