French companies have a lot to offer the US in terms of green packaging, according to French business development agency Ubifrance.

In partnership with the Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Institute (PMMI), the agency is organizing a Franco-US symposium on sustainable packaging in New York on December 14.

‘How to Go Green in Packaging’ is a one day event and will include general information about sustainability during packaging manufacture as well as a number of industry specific workshops looking at cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and food.

Keynote speakers from trade associations, the PMMI, and big industry players, both US and French, will lead the morning sessions and the afternoon will be dominated by the workshops, explained a spokesperson for Ubifrance in Chicago.

The agency hopes to attract over a hundred US companies to the event which will take place at the New York Academy of Sciences.

Promote business in the field of green packaging

He explained how the aim of the event is to bring together French companies and potential clients in the US, and promote business and exchanges between them. “France has some good companies and we can make some good offers,” said the spokesperson.

Europe is in general ahead of the US in the world of green packaging and new materials, he continued.

According to Ubifrance, sustainable development and eco design are some of the most important factors for buyers and packaging manufacturers in France, with 60 and 57 percent respectively stating they are key factors of innovation.

In the US, the demand for green packaging is set to grow by 3.4 percent annually to reach $43.9bn in 2013, it claims.
