Dow Corning silicone blends work with wider ingredients range

Dow Corning, the US-based skin and hair care formulation company, has developed two patented silicone organic elastomer blends that can be used with polar organic ingredients.

The company claims these can help formulators blend silicone products with organic (carbon containing) ingredients.

“Silicone elastomers are increasingly used to impart distinctive textures and sensory effects, but incompatibility with organics has posed a formulating challenge”,​ Erin Lacher, industry specialist for Dow Corning’s Beauty and Personal Care industry, explained.

Feel and aesthetics

The two ingredients, EL-8050 ID and EL-8051 IN, can improve the formulation properties and sensory feel of a number of products where organic ingredients are used, explained Dow Corning’s Ingrid Vervier.

These could include sun care formulations including the organic sun filters such as octyl methoxycinnamate (OMC) where the new organic compatible blends can help formulate clear formulations, she said.

Other products that would benefit from the new blends are color cosmetics such as lipsticks, where color transfer resistance will be improved, she added.

Both the ingredients are delivered in an organic carrier fluid, but polar organic functionality has also been built in to the elastomer structure.

Flexibility for formulators

The EL-8050 ID is delivered in isododecane which is more volatile than the EL-8051 IN’s carrier isodecyl neopentanoate.

Vervier explained that the two options allow formulators more flexibility as they have different properties within the formulation stage and will alter the texture of the resulting product as well providing different sensory benefits.

Dow Corning introduced the two ingredients to the American market at Suppliers Day, held in New Jersey earlier this month. The European launch of the products was at the in-cosmetics show in Munich.
