Congress uncovers aerosol trends and innovation

Sustainability, artwork techniques and the art of spray were core topics at the Aerosol Forum in Paris this month.

Held at the Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie in Paris 10-11 March, the congress focused on opportunities and developments for aerosols in the health, food and beauty markets.

Sutainability focus

Charles Duclaux, L’Oreal, gave the opening address sharing his views on the stakes and challenges of environmental labelling over the years to come.

Duclaux underlined the importance of giving consumers the level of environmental information they need to make their purchases.

Other talks followed on the subject of sustainability. For example, Henri-Marc de Montalembert, from the French trade body CFA, presented details of an of eco-design software tool for analysing the environmental impact of several aerosol packaging options.

Session on artwork techniques

Other presentations followed on artwork techniques and the art of spray. Jay Gouliard, vice president of global packaging at Unilever, chaired a session of talks on design, eco-design and artwork techniques.

Among the speakers were Philippe Morel from Sleever International, who described the use of sleeves to decorate aerosols, and Leopold Werdich from Tubex, who discussed printing and varnishing, forming and embossing techniques that can set cans apart from rival products.

Two sessions cover the art of spray

Thibault de Maillard, SOPPEC, France, chaired one of two conference sessions covering the art of spray. He shared his vision of aerosol as a “modern” packaging, his knowledge of the technologies used to respect safety and the environment, in addition to the new “technical applications” markets.

Pierre Goffinet, IRFAQ, chaired the second session on the art of spray and focused his talk on formulation and its relationship with “spray” quality.

Awards for aerosol innovation

The Aerosol Forum also played host to the 2009 Paris Aerosol Awards to recognise technical innovation in the aerosol industry. The winners are listed below:

  • Cryozone by Kéraskin Esthetics, L’Oreal, for the New Market category
  • Sylva Gun by Soppec, for the Functionality category
  • L’huile d’olive extra-vierge pulvérisée by Noveo, Fareva, for the Design category
  • Naturprotect, Sanex by Sara Lee for the Aesthetics and Artwork category

The Jury also gave the following products a special distinction:

  • What a feeling by Tubex
  • The Fructis Style range, Garnier, L’Oreal

The next edition of Aerosol Forum is planned for Tuesday 9th and Wednesday 10th March 2010 in Paris.
