Beauty consumers affected by a price-fixing scandal will have the chance to get their own back on leading retailers in a $175m cosmetics giveaway this month.

Some of the biggest retail names in America including Nordstrom’s, Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s will be handing out beauty products as part of five year-old settlement.

Price fixing allegations

The stores were accused of price fixing, and although they claimed no wrong doing, they agreed in class action settlement in February 2004 to give away $175m in cosmetics and perfumes.

Those consumers that bought products from the stores listed in the suit between May 1994 and July 2003 will be able to claim free products, including mascara, moisturizers and fragrances.

Conditions of the giveaway

From January 20 and for 7 days after, or as long as stocks last, consumers will be able to claim their cosmetic entitlement.

But for those who have missed out on their chance to fill up their beauty cabinet with free cosmetics there will be no opportunity to reschedule.

The giveaway will be carried out on a first come, first serve basis with consumers having the right to receive one free product for every manufacturer that they bought from during the period in question.

Beauty manufacturers involved

L’Oreal, Estee Lauder and Chanel are among the list of manufacturers that are on the list of companies that consumers may claim products from.
