Safety and quality expert Intertek has purchased a Polish testing laboratory that will serve the consumer goods industries in the region.

Eko-Lab is located near Plock, 130km from Warsaw, and the Chicago-based Intertek group believes this central location will help serve a number of clients across the country.

The laboratory will enable producers of food, cosmetics and household chemicals in the region to assess the levels of pathogens, micro-organisms and bacteria in their products.

In-depth assessment

In addition, food producers will be able to assess the levels of protein, carbohydrate and fat components of their products, according to the company.

The modern consumer demands the goods they purchase adhere to high safety standards and in an increasingly global market place this means manufacturers internationally need to be seen to comply.

Intertek’s acquisition of the Polish lab, for a reported PLM 15.1m (€3.95m), attests to the growing importance of the region.

Adapting to an international network

Wanda Ewers, General Manager of EKO-LAB, stated: "EKO-LAB is thrilled to join the Intertek team and add to the international network, global solutions and the comprehensive range of services the Group offers in food and non-food streams.

“With the combination of our specialised services in Europe and Intertek's expertise in audit, legal consultancy, inspection and certification, we are able to provide a complete package."

Commenting on the acquisition Dr. Jochen Zoller, President of Intertek's food services, said "Intertek is pleased to acquire the expertise of EKO-LAB which expands our scope of services in the growing markets of Eastern Europe."
