Senomyx has announced a partnership with fragrance and flavour supplier Firmenich regarding its sucralose enhancer that could be used in oral care products.

The San Diego-based company has cited Firmenich’s position, which straddles both the food and the personal care markets as one of the reasons behind the partnership.

According to the deal, Switzerland-based Firmenich will gain exclusive worldwide rights to commercialise the product S2383, which allows formulators to use smaller quantities of the sweetener sucralose whilst retaining the same taste.

Royalties will be paid by Firmenich to Senomyx when the ingredient is sold, both on its own and as part of a flavour system.

The company will be targeting many markets with the ingredient, including beverages, dairy products, baked goods and desserts as well as oral care products, and it was this flexibility that attracted Senomyx.

Food and oral care

“It is noteworthy that Firmenich is well-established in both food and non-food consumer markets, and their broad rights will allow them to reach customers that we would not be able to access alone,” said Senomyx CEO Kent Snyder.

Earlier this week Senomyx announced it had gained a GRAS (generally recognised as safe) notice from the FDA meaning it is now available in the US, and other countries that accept the GRAS notification, for a wide range of applications.

According to the company, S2383 allows manufacturers to cut costs as they can decrease the amount of sucralose needed in the formulation.

“In taste tests, S2383 allowed the amount of sucralose in product prototypes to be reduced by up to 75 per cent, while maintaining the desired sweet taste,” a spokesperson for the company said.

Aside from the cost potential of using the ingredient, the group says it can also have improvements in product taste.
