A number of recent product launches suggest that airless pump systems are becoming the first choice of many prestige skin care manufacturers.

Airless systems have the benefit of keeping air out of the dispensing system which helps prevent contamination and extends the life of the product.

A growing number of prestige personal care suppliers are choosing the system in an attempt to protect their high-end formulations from contamination.

Airless for men from Rexam

Earlier this week global packaging supplier Rexam announced its Sof’Airless assembly was the dispensing system of choice for male skin care company Zirh.

Initially, the US-based company will be using Rexam’s packaging for three of its products: a wrinkle concentrate, an eye cream and a recharging moisturiser.

Rexam’s system includes the SP343 lotion pump, bottle and cap. According to the company, the lotion pump is clean room assembled and the bottle equipped with a piston that is fully protected until the moment of filling, which avoids pre-contamination of the product.

In addition, the company claims that the packaging is ergonomically designed and reacts to a soft finger pressure making it easy to use and suitable even for the most challenging of formulations.

Anti-aging serum benefits from airless treatment

Another of the week’s releases using the airless concept was Institut Esthederm’s Cellular Concentrate.

The limited edition version of the product, released to mark the cosmetic company’s 30th birthday, is packaged in France-based Airlessytems’ double hull bottle from the Aura range.

The company, who claim to have invented the airless concept, released the product late last year. It is made up of an outer shell of SAN crystal which encloses an internal PP barrel to which the piston is fitted.

The double layer system holds both technical and visual benefits, according to Institut Esthederm’s product manager Laurence Monod.

“The double hull bottle allows an extremely distinctive design. It addresses many technical constraints while offering a very satisfactory result in terms of sobriety and elegance,” he said.

Monod also added that the double system helped to protect the formulation from light as well as oxygen and other external contaminants.
