R&D teams get their very own skin treatment

A UK company has launched a new skin care treatment specially
developed for research and developments teams handling chemicals
and materials that can cause a range of undesirable reactions,
reports Simon Pitman.

Fab Lab, a newly set up division of Zisys providing solutions for the research and development field, has just launched Pro-Shield Lab, a topical cream that has been formulated to minimise the risk caused by the host of irritant agents often encountered when developing with new cosmetic products under laboratory conditions.

With research and development forming a crucial part of most consumer industries, especially that of cosmetics, ensuring the safety and well-being of lab staff is growing in importance, particularly as international regulations on laboratory safety are constantly being updated.

Pro-Shield Lab has antibacterial properties that help to treat dry skin problems that are often associated with working in such labs. As well as chemicals, reagents and other irritants, exposure to cross infections from external forces that are often untraceable, together with the wearing of rubber gloves, presents hazards that can lead to skin conditions such as dermatitis or eczema.

Clinical trials of the product took place recently at the University Hospital Birmingham NHS Trust, where 102 staff tested the treatment. The trialling showed that skin symptoms were significantly improved and that bacteria levels were greatly reduced, even three hours after applying the treatment.

The company says that the formula has been developed with antibacterial properties as well as moisturizing properties that help fight dry skin conditions and common bacterias such as E. coli and salmonella, while providing a non-greasy waterproofing barrier that helps protect skin for up to four hours.

The formula, which includes 1 per cent Triclosan, is available in 200ml bottle form, together with a 500 ml pump-style dispenser and is supplied on a global basis.
