Clariant to showcase vegetal-based biopolymers at in-cosmetics
Swiss specialty chemicals firm Clariant is showcasing its recently launched ‘Touch of Nature’ range of vegetal-based biopolymers at this year’s in-cosmetics event taking place in Barcelona from 17-19 April.

The three product lines, Vitipure, Velsan and Zenvivo, are the fruit of a partnership between Clariant and bio-refinery products manufacturer KitoZyme. Developed in response to demand for natural-based products, according to Clariant, they are active ingredients and sensory boosters for skin care and hair care.

These are natural ingredients that moisturise, repair and protect skin and hair, and they are extraordinarily gentle,” said Ralf Zerrer, head of strategic marketing at Clariant’s Industrial & Consumer Specialties business unit.

Derived from fungi

All products in the range are derived from non-GMO, fully renewable and traceable fungi, and Zenvivo and Vitipure are Ecocert-certified.

Claimed to be the only vegetal Chitosan on the market, the non-allergenic Zenvivo is available in two different grades.

Its high-molecular grade, Zenvivo Aqua, can be used as a conditioning agent for both rinse-off and leave-on skin and hair formulations, or in colour cosmetics, sun care or hair-styling products due to its film-forming properties. The low-molecular grade Zenvivo Protect with its anti-microbial properties can be used as a preservative in cosmetics or to reduce odours in deodorants and mouthwash.

Velsan Soft as natural alternative to silicones

Billed as a natural alternative for silicones without compromising on aesthetics or effectiveness, Velsan Soft can boost wetting and foaming properties and provides moisturising and conditioning benefits, the company claims.

According to Clariant, it can be used in body and facial washes to produce a creamy foam, in hair care products to repair and coat the hair, or in sun care and leave-on applications to enhance the spreading of formulations and overall sensory feel.

The Vitipure ingredients help to repair and protect skin, with Clariant noting that they combine different functions including wrinkle reduction and hydration for ease of use by personal care manufacturers. Vitipure Feeling is suitable for all skin care applications, while Vitipure Sensation is a refined grade for use in colour cosmetics.

Clariant says that the ingredients, which are currently in commercial trials with its customers, appear to offer superior sensory properties to synthetic and animal-based products.
