AMSilk and Rahn enter European distribution deal for silk biopolymers

Synthetic silk biopolymer supplier AMSilk has teamed up with Rahn for the Zurich-based company to distribute two of its cosmetics ingredients in several European countries.

The AMsilk ingredients in question are its Silkgel (hydrogel) and Silkbeads (microparticles), which contain silk biopolymers manufactured using a unique biotechnological process, and claim to give personal care products protective properties

Both of these ingredients are used in personal care and cosmetic products thanks to functional properties such as creating a breathable shield against harmful environmental factors and bacteria; and they can also store and transport ingredients thereby prolonging their efficacy.

To expand distribution in Europe, AMSilk has now signed an agreement with Rahn about selling Silkgel and Silkbeads in several European countries; and this will cover Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Monaco, Great Britain, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Poland.

At the same time, AMSilk will distribute its products in territories and fields of application Rahn does not cover.

Skin care benefits

The target applications for silk biopolymers such as these is in skin care as they can help act like a second skin by offering protection against harmful environmental factors and bacteria.

AMSilk says this does not impact the skin’s breathability, and actually keeps both cosmetic and medical ingredients on the skin for longer time periods, allowing them to better develop their effects.

Silkbeads also ensure that the skin retains moisture longer by creating a matte effect by absorbing excess sebum, the skin’s natural oil.

Furthermore, they can generate wrinkle-minimising ‘soft-focus’ effects in anti-ageing products, according to the German supplier.

The hypoallergenic and biocompatible AMSilk biopolymers are well-tolerated by the skin and were awarded the ranking ‘very good’ by the Dermatest research institute.

In addition to personal care cosmetic products, AMSilk is currently focusing on using silk biopolymers in the fields of medical technology and industrial applications & textiles.
