Inaugural Global Beauty Day launches at in-cosmetics Global on 3 April in Paris

Leading cosmetics and personal care event in-cosmetics Global returns to its spiritual home in Paris with inaugural Global Beauty Day to celebrate diversity

in-cosmetics Global will return to Paris from April 2 to 4 2019, bringing together the world’s leading beauty and personal care industry suppliers and experts. To mark the occasion, the organisers are launching the first ever Global Beauty Day on April 3, honouring diversity in the industry.

Creating an inclusive culture in the beauty sector has been a complex challenge, with the industry historically being dominated by bigger brands with a mass appeal, but who were less agile and less able to encompass mass individuality. There is a call for greater diversity in beauty as consumers seek uniqueness and products that cater to their individuality. Today, millennials are pushing for more inclusive beauty, encouraging challenger and indie brands to stir up the market, forcing the major players to take notice and move towards product ranges that are fully representative of the world’s population, catering to a range of skin tones and needs.

Some 70%[1] of black and Asian women in the UK feel that high street stores don’t cater for their beauty needs, pushing them to pay up to 70% more for products from specialist, high-end ranges. The opportunity however is there, with black women investing more than £4.8 billion on products and services each year worldwide and spending twice as much as other consumers on skincare. When international musician Rihanna launched her 40 shade Pro Filter Foundation line, the darkest sold out fastest, demonstrating the need for inclusive beauty.

Just as some races may feel ignored by the mainstream beauty industry, so too do men and older women, where the choice becomes even more limited. It is no secret that men have been using skincare lines traditionally aimed at females for a long time, and there is a burgeoning market for cosmetics particularly among younger men. So, 2019 promises to celebrate uniqueness and diversity, through the delivery of a greater focus on ethnicities, gender, LGBTQ+ identity and different skin types.

A Diversity in Beauty series social campaign will run as part of Global Beauty Day, which will recur annually on the second day of in-cosmetics Global. It will highlight brands and professionals who are challenging traditional beauty standards and promoting beauty for all within the industry.

Highlighting exhibitors who are launching products with a focus on diversity will ensure R&D professionals are able to identify brands making their mark within the sector and making vital changes in the industry. Product demonstrations and live interviews will be hosted on the show floor throughout the day, focusing on a range of key topics including new formulations and ingredients that aid inclusivity and diversity. Sessions will pose questions to the brands such as ‘what’s next for cosmetics in 2020’.

Roziani Zulkifli, exhibition manager of in-cosmetics Global, commented: “As a leading show in the global beauty industry, we wanted to celebrate diversity in this fast-paced sector and provide a platform for the debate. 2019 is shaping up to be an exciting year in the industry with diversity and inclusion high on suppliers’ agendas. Our programme of activity ahead of the show will culminate on April 3, representing the united voice of consumers and demonstrating that inclusivity is a growing trend that should be recognised by brands large and small. We aim to challenge brands to evolve to meet these new industry standards and give practical advice on how to succeed in an increasingly competitive environment.”
