IFF acquires three personal care ingredients from Kemin Industries
IFF-Lucas Meyer Cosmetics (IFF-LMC), a cosmetic actives subsidiary of International Flavors & Fragrances Inc., has expanded and strengthened its strategic portfolio.

The company has bought up three personal care ingredients and related intellectual property from Kemin Industries.

This acquisition expands IFF-LMC’s product portfolio, and the company says the move is particularly aimed at to those customers who are focused on the environment and sustainability.

Aligned with IFF and IFF-LMC’s commitment to sustainability and natural product offerings, I am thrilled to announce the addition of these key, responsibly sourced ingredients to our growing and increasingly diverse portfolio,” confirmed Antonio Lara, President – CEO, IFF-Lucas Meyer Cosmetics.

“Consumers are more aware than ever of the impact their choices have on the environment, so including these compelling active and functional products in our line is a win for our customers, consumers, and the planet.”

Sustainability spotlight

Sustainability is firmly at the top of the industry agenda, is is set to be a major focus for 2019.

Ingredients are certainly one key area where this trend is seeing innovation and consumer scrutiny.

As Amarjit Sahota, President and Founder, Ecovia Intelligence, recently explained to CosmeticsDesign: “Most innovation [towards sustainability] is in terms of formulations, whereby companies are using green / novel ingredients. The products are marketed as natural / clean / free-from.

A wide range of green ingredients are available for preservatives, surfactants, emulsifiers, etc. We are also novel ingredients like Amazonian plants, ayurvedic herbs, African oils, and mountain flowers being used in formulations.”

The sustainability expert suggests that traceability of raw materials will become a key focus in the coming five years.

Cosmetic and ingredient firms are under pressure to show that their raw materials are ethically sourced. Palm oil is a good example of this, however expect more raw materials to be scrutinised,” he confirms.

New products, green profiles

The new IFF-LMC products are:

  • Lysofix™: an easy-to-use and cold-process lysophospholipid emulsifier extracted from a non-GMO soybean source. It enhances formulas by evenly dispersing sunscreen and makeup pigments, provides immediate hydration and support collagen and elastin production while imparting a luxurious texture to the skin.

  • XFoliPEARL™: Provides a gentle and efficient exfoliation and is an eco-friendly and efficient alternative to plastic beads.
