UV spotlight: BASF launches ‘360 degree’ and eco-friendly sunscreen concepts
EcoSun Pass by BASF’s Care Creations is a new methodology especially developed for sun protection products – evaluating the environmental compatibility of UV filter systems in sunscreens.

That, along with the ingredients player’s new 360 degree sun care concept which is based on a new microsite all about sun protection, shows a big emphasis on UV emerging for BASF.

The EcoSun methodology supports the transparent assessment of UV filters based on internationally recognized criteria and comprises eight different parameters, from biodegradation and aquatic toxicity to endocrine disruption potential.

According to BASF, it considers environmental factors for individual UV filters, and provides a comprehensive environmental evaluation of filter system too.

Meanwhile, the Global Technical Center Sun Care microsite allows users to discover info on UV filters, alongside tips on sun safety.

Hosted by BASF’s Care Creations team, the Global Technical Center Sun Care site makes the company’s sun care expertise available to both customers and consumers, the company says.

It explores UV filters, skin types, the light spectrum and solar radiation in more detail.

UV focus driven by consumer questions

Marcel Schnyder, Head of Global Technical Center Sun Care, Personal Care Solutions Europe, explains the motivation behind this renewed emphasis on UV.

“We love the sun. But we also know that sun protection is extremely important, especially nowadays. It’s not just about avoiding sunburn any more,” he explains.

“There are so many questions that consumers in particular have around sun protection and their sunscreens. Like, how do UV filters actually work? What is the UV index? How does UV radiation affect the skin and organisms?”

EcoSun: sustainability and sun care

The potential negative impacts sunscreens may have on the environment are increasingly being discussed and are subject of comprehensive research worldwide, BASF explains.

Consumers, it says, are looking for sunscreens that offer an effective UV protection and at the same time are eco-friendly.

“On the basis of latest scientific findings, our EcoSun Pass enables us to advise formulators already during the development stage, which UV filter combinations are best suited for their application – in the interest of both the consumer and the environment,” said Dr. Christian Cremer, Director Global Development & Technical Service UV Protection, Personal Care Solutions Europe.
