Cannabis in UK beauty: a major new trend for Europe?
A new cross-industry event, ‘Future Cannabis Strategies Europe’ looks to explore the rising trend that may have huge potential for the beauty industry.

Whole Foods recently named CBD as one of their top food trends for 2019 and, and the market set to be worth more than an estimated $22 billion by 2022.

We’re seeing this trend already making headway into the beauty industry: indeed, Holland & Barrett health food retailer has launched a CBD infused skin care range through its stores nationwide and online.

The industry is taking note: the new trade event is being launched in London, and features several sessions dedicated to beauty, cosmetics and personal care.

Moving on from hemp

According to the show’s organisers (full details of the event are available here), the rising consumer appetite for cannabis related product is an evolution of the enthusiasm for hemp oil as an ingredient, which has been around for several years.

“Celebrated for its moisturising properties, Hemp oil has been used and popularised by The Body Shop for many years,” the organisers explain.

“Hemp oil is the most common form of cannabis found in skincare products. However, hemp oil does not stand alone.

“Sourced from the flowers of the cannabis plant, cannabidoil (CBD) oil is another compound that has great ingredients for reducing redness, irritation and even signs of ageing. Furthermore, CBD oil can treat skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis and eczema.”

Brands and retailers give it a go

Estée Lauder, with its Hello, Calm face mask, is one major brand who has recently launched a product in this area: the product sticks with hemp though, and uses hemp seed oil.

Meanwhile, retailers are also showing confidence in the trend. Holland and Barrett and Harvey Nichols are both now stocking skin care products that are cannabis/CBD oil-infused.

The Future Cannabis Strategies Europe event aims to  bring together strategic business leaders from across the wider European Consumer-Facing Cannabis products category, and takes place in London 29-30 January.
