The European Parliament has announced its approval of the nomination of Malta's Tonio Borg for health and consumer protection commissioner.

Borg is to replace European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy John Dalli, who resigned earlier this year following an investigation for involvement in fraud.

Borg was approved by secret ballot in Strasbourg with 386 votes in favour and 281 votes against. Another 28 MEPs abstained.

He stated that he would enforce the full animal testing ban in cosmetics in 2013 which has attracted support from animal welfare groups, but urged caution from the industry over efficient replacements to ensure product safety.
